ON THE COVER
The 2013 Nissan LEAF
The technology behind hybrid and electric vehicles continues to grow. Nissans efforts to advance electric vehicle technology have resulted in design changes and improvements for the 2013 LEAF that has increased the driving range by 14%.
With integrated high voltage components, the redesigned e-PT is more efficient, compact, and light weight has helped to improve energy economy. An expanded regenerative braking system function gives LEAF its greatest gain in efficiency. Changes to the charging system have reduced charging time and improved energy efficiency, and increased driving range. A climate control new heat pump-type system (SV and SL models) and PTC heater uses less auxiliary energy while still providing the same output as the previous model. Redesigned brake calipers reduce frictional drag during non-braking operation which also helps extend driving range.
There are also some tweaks to minimize power consumption, such as heated seat for all seats, heated steering wheel and heat shield ceiling, and a special energy-efficient BOSE stereo designed to help make the new LEAF more efficient.
The LEAF is now being assembled in Smyrna, Tennessee, including battery production. The new Li-ion battery has a reduction in weight is more advanced and requires new service procedures.
