Driver Supplemental Knee Air Bag

The 2015 Murano^® is equipped with the Nissan Advanced Air Bag System that includes dualstage supplemental front air bags with seat belt and occupant classification sensors. The inflation rate of these dual-stage air bags adjusts depending on crash severity and seat belt usage. The new Murano now is equipped with a driver supplemental knee air bag. The left knee air bag module is single stage and located in the knee bolster area below the steering wheel. By providing a layer of cushioning between the driver’s knees and the dashboard, this supplemental knee air bag (along with the use of a seat belt) helps reduce the driver’s risk of injury to his or her lower extremities. Also, roof-mounted curtain supplemental air bags with rollover sensor help provide head protection for outboard occupants in the event of a side impact or rollover.

Front Seat Belt Pre-tensioners

Both the driver seat and the front passenger seat are equipped with a pre-tensioner system with load limiters. The pre-tensioner operates simultaneously with the SRS air bag system in the event of a frontal collision with an impact exceeding a specified level. For 2015, the Murano front passenger seat includes a lap belt pre-tensioner with load limiter. Working with the seat belt retractor, the pre-tensioner helps tighten the seat belt when the vehicle becomes involved in certain types of collisions, helping to restrain front seat occupants. When passengers in a vehicle are thrown forward in the event of a collision and the restraining force of the seat belt exceeds a specified level, the load limiter permits the specified extension of the seat belt by a twisting of the ELR shaft and a relaxation of the chest-area seat belt web tension while maintaining force. The pre-tensioner is encased with the seat belt retractor. These seat belts are used the same way as conventional seat belts.
