"2017 Q60 DYNAMIC DIGITAL SUSPENSION
The 2017 Q60 Sport and Red Sport 400 trim levels are available with a Dynamic Digital Suspension (DDS) control technology. When operating, DDS can recalibrate the vehicle’s ride balance by continually adjusting to corners and changes in road conditions. It uses dampers with electronically controlled adjustable valves that provides firmer damping control in Sport or Sport+ modes.
WHAT IT DOES
The DDS monitors body roll, pitch and bounce, and uses electronically adjustable shock absorbers to continuously adjust each corner of the vehicle.
The object of the continuous adjustments is to keep the body as straight and level as possible regardless of the road surface or whether the vehicle is cornering, stopping, accelerating, etc.
SYSTEM COMPONENTS
The components of the Dynamic Digital suspension are:
DYNAMIC DIGITAL SUSPENSION CONTROL
Providing digital motion control with the dynamic digital suspension control technology is based on the concept called “Skyhook Theory”. The skyhook design theory describes how the vehicle is helped to maintain a stable posture when it’s moving as if suspended by an imaginary straight line. The imaginary straight line is calculated from the base reference value provided by each shock absorber actuator signal at “0 vehicle body velocity”.
During driving and with changes in road surface conditions the DDS monitors the vehicle’s motion (body roll, pitch, and bounce rate). The chassis control module then compares the calculated base reference values and the input signals it receives from the: ECM, TCM, ABS actuator and control unit, steering angle sensor, and drive mode selection to determine its control output.
The chassis control module electronically variably adjusts each DDS shock absorber actuator to regulate damping force every 1/100 second depending on the estimated body motion and the calculated base value.
SKYHOOK THEORY
NOTE: DDS electronically adjusts the damping force of the actuators to help absorb bumps and undulating road conditions to help maintain a flat and stable ride.
HOW DDS WORKS
Each of the shock absorbers on the DDS system uses a proportional solenoid valve that operates at high speed [tenth of a millisecond increments]. The solenoid valve operates a control valve to regulate the rate of oil flow in the shock absorber.
The shock absorber actuator opens/closes the control valve by moving the solenoid core with the control current from the chassis control module to regulate the damping force.
