MOVING UP - Congratulations to our Nissan SCOPE & Infiniti KEI Masters
Christian Pineiro
Nissan SCOPE Master
Kings Nissan Inc.
Brooklyn, NY
Christian Pineiro stressed the importance of not waiting to be called upon to gain the necessary knowledge to become a master technician. “I took initiative on my own and completed the online courses on my own in my free time.” His other recommendations include: “I would focus on electrical. The EV and HEV are becoming more and more mainstream, so focus on the electrical aspect. They are also the most time consuming, especially if the car has been in an accident. The harness stuff is the most time consuming.”
Pineiro looks forward to further advancement with Nissan. He hopes to go to GT-R and LEAF training soon. Christian believes EV and HEV vehicles are the way to go for the future.
In his free time, Christian works on his own cars and rides his bicycle, which is a road bike. At this time, his rides can average anywhere from 20 to 25 miles.
Tim Wallace
Nissan SCOPE Master
South Colorado Springs Nissan
Colorado Springs, CO
Tim Wallace says the best part of his job is the challenges that are presented daily. “I know the product pretty well, so I don’t mind working on any of it. I am happy to fix anything. I am GT-R certified, and I don’t mind working on a GT-R. They’re fun.” Wallace views each job equally, but the occasional electrical concern is difficult to resolve because of the time it takes to get to some of the connectors.
Wallace also made it clear that staying up-to-date on new technology is important for him and new technicians. “I refresh my subject knowledge almost daily because the job changes so much you are never doing the same thing over and over. Almost daily, I am refreshing my knowledge in an area and learning something new.”
Tim says he achieved master technician status by doing these two things: “Working hard and doing the job correctly. Stick with your training. The more you train, the more you learn and the easier your job gets.”
Wallace’s time off is spent playing golf, working on his project car, a 1994 Infiniti G20, or fishing for trout.
Terry Baker
Infiniti KEI Master
Rickenbaugh Infiniti
Dacono, CO
Terry Baker’s loyalty for Nissan and Infiniti began in 1980 when he first started with Datsun. He feels very much at home with the company and has proven to be a valuable member of the Rickenbaugh team. Terry is both a Nissan and Infiniti master technician, a GT-R and Hybrid certified technician and has a Doctor of Motors from Perfect Circle. Starting to work on cars in high school, he ended up following the path that many car enthusiasts share by attending Wichita Automotive Institute in Wichita, Kansas and becoming a technician.
Baker stated: “Being a master technician has opened doors that otherwise may not have opened.” He has plenty of wisdom to share with new technicians, such as: “Be open and trainable, find a dealer that will invest in you and you in them, and stay put for a long time. If technicians are always changing dealers, then why would the dealer want to invest the time and money for training? Work hard, have almost no comebacks, be honest, show up every day, stay late if you have to, and do all you can to make the dealer you work for successful; the rest will fall into place.”
Terry is happily married with four kids and four grandkids surrounding him. He and his wife enjoy hunting and remodeling their home, are very active with their church and frequently volunteer in the community.
Pat Costello
Nissan SCOPE Master
Nissan of Chesapeake, LLC
Chesapeake, VA
Pat Costello is proud to be a master technician. He says the greatest part of being a master technician is: “Knowing my personal accomplishments. In my career, I have reached the top.” Costello has automotive work in his blood. “I like engine work. I have always found the internal workings of an engine interesting. I was five when I started looking at cars. I grew up in a family full of technicians. My dad is a master technician and my grandfather was too. So it wasn’t too shocking that I became one. I like the Nissan brand. I like the company as a whole, and I have worked for a couple different ones. I like the cars and the functionality.”
Costello’s guidance for new technicians is motivational: “Take in all the factory training that is available. Take advantage of it. You reach the level of master by taking advantage of what’s available from the manufacturer.”
When he is not fixing an engine, Pat spends time with his three girls, ages three, eight and 13. “We do lots of traveling and go to museums. We are going to the aquarium. In the rest of the free time that I have, I work with performance cars. One of them is a Nissan-powered stock car.”
Nicholas Baldwin
Infiniti KEI Master
Infiniti of Camelback
Phoenix, AZ
Every morning Nick Baldwin starts the day the same way; he checks for new bulletins on ASIST. Keeping current on everything Infiniti, he stays ahead of the game when fielding questions from service advisors and customers alike. Nick’s drive to learn is the reason he became a master technician in 2009. He has this wisdom to share about it: “Show a strong desire to want to be a better you. Never stop learning. There are always new things to stay up-to-date on when it relates to education and service bulletins. Make it one of your goals. Take online training before you are asked to take it.”
Baldwin loves working with his hands and always gets gratification from repairing a vehicle because: “Everything I fix will be better than it was before.” He enjoys the heavy line work and that few hours of solitude he gets when working on an Infiniti at the shop.
Nick enjoys spending time with his wife and daughter in their swimming pool and at family barbecues. They also love world traveling; they have visited Costa Rica and Puerto Rico this year alone.
Lance Dominguez
Nissan SCOPE Master
Cannon Nissan Jackson LLC
Jackson, MS
Lance Dominguez achieved master technician status by taking Nissan classes as much as possible and working hard. He says: “Keep working hard; keep studying. Things are always changing. Concentrate on learning electrical systems, which are the most difficult.”
With Nissan for 14 years, Lance believes in the product: “Nissan is a very reliable car. It is sporty and the quality is very good, especially with the new models, which are very reliable.” The Altima is his favorite Nissan model and his favorite automobile to work on. “It is a nice, roomy car. It is comfortable and is a great balance of practical and sporty.”
A man of many talents, Lance trades stock options when he is not fixing cars. “I trade stock options and I am also into drag racing. The stocks are doing good and getting better.” Trading and growing stock options sounds like a worthy hobby for a guy that is looking forward to retirement.
Jerry Parnell
Nissan SCOPE Master
Vaden Nissan
Savannah, GA
With Nissan for close to 40 years, Jerry Parnell started his automotive work in Savannah with a different brand. He stayed with the dealer through a series of buyouts, which eventually brought Datsun and then Nissan to him. “Of all the cars, I like the Z car. I used to work on B210 Honey Bees, 310s, 510s, and 710 wagons. They have really changed over the years. They were fun cars to drive and they were good cars. Nissan is a really good car, up with the times. We have a good product; good and innovative cars.”
Parnell describes one of the biggest perks of being a master technician as the sense of accountability that the title fosters. “It makes me study and keep up with it, and I get sent to school a lot more, so I definitely have a deeper sense of accountability.” Jerry’s advice to new technicians is solid: “You have to keep up with the cars, stay on the computer, and study for all the tests and the SIRs.”
Jerry resides in Hilton Head, and in his time away from Nissan, he works in his yard, kayaks and whitewater rafts in the mountains.
Dan Bevins
Nissan SCOPE Master
Lia Nissan
Schenectady, NY
Dan Bevins is a car enthusiast who fell in love with them at an early age after watching his grandfather work on the family vehicles in the boondocks of Russie, New York. Starting out as a Honda guy, Dan soon was attracted to the Nissan GT-R. “I believe in tasteful, slight and often expensive modifications that one has to double-take to even notice…a stock look with flair. Like the Infiniti Q50 Eau Rouge prototype loaded with a VR38DETT. That thing is sweet!”
Hired at Nissan two and a half years ago, Bevins was quick to show his eagerness to complete all of the necessary training and became a master technician quickly thereafter. He explains: “You need to be willing to sacrifice the time to go to training, train at home on the Virtual Academy and be willing to go out and get your ASE certifications.” Dan truly appreciates the level of training and literature that Nissan provides.
Dan just celebrated his one-year wedding anniversary with his beautiful wife, Caitlin. For now, they are enjoying “being young without limitations.” Dan likes to go target shooting with his friends deep in the woods, and Caitlin is a Champion Morgan show horse rider.
Chuck Gorospe
Nissan SCOPE Master
Lamb Nissan, Inc.
Prescott, AZ
When asked about the perks of his accomplishment of being a master technician, Chuck Gorospe mentioned how much he loved the Visa gift card, jacket, and ring that he was given when he was certified. “The best way to become a master technician is for the dealer to send the person to school so they can get the classes and achieve it. I worked for Infiniti for 12 years and was a specialist. Now, I have been with Nissan for longer than twelve years, and I am a master technician.”
Chuck’s accomplishments have gotten him more than a gift card and a jacket. “At this particular dealer, it has gotten me the role of shop foreman and the ability to work on all of the problem vehicles.” Gorospe is a proponent of Nissan’s HEV and EV vehicles because of their lessened impact on the environment. He says the two highlights to his job as master technician and shop foreman at Lamb Nissan are the challenges and that he gets to help as many people as he can by teaching newer technicians and serving customers.
Chase Crawford
Nissan SCOPE Master
Wolfchase Nissan
Bartlett, TN
“Make it a goal and do your best.” That sums up how Chase Crawford feels about technicians becoming master technicians. He also advises them to: “Take your time with repairing cars; don’t rush through things. And concentrate on electrical training due to today’s complex systems.” Electrical problems have actually become Chase’s favorite type of repair in the 10 years he has been working on cars. In the four years that he has been employed at Nissan, Chase has really come to appreciate ASIST and C-III Plus, which tend, which tend to make his life easier. In fact, he uses many of the resources available to him, such as: TECH LINE, TechAlert, TechTalk and the ESMs.
Crawford became a master technician in May 2013. He is married with one child and loves spending time with his family. When not at work, he enjoys hunting, fishing or doing anything else that involves the great outdoors.
Ben Bacon
Nissan SCOPE Master
Middletown Nissan, LLC.
Middletown, CT
The decision to become a technician came naturally to Ben Bacon since he has always been a car enthusiast. After falling in love with automotive repair in high school shop classes, he set off to a local trade school and was hired at Nissan soon thereafter. Ben became a master technician last year and just celebrated 12 years with Nissan. Not surprisingly, in his spare time he enjoys tinkering with cars. Designing and making one-of-a-kind car parts is a challenge that Ben finds extremely rewarding.
Seeing how Ben appreciates a challenge, he is up for working on whatever repair or vehicle comes his way. He freely admits that certain conditions are very difficult to diagnose, such as: “Intermittent drivability problems. You can drive a car forever, even with the customer, and you can’t duplicate the problem. This can be very annoying and time consuming.”
Ben suggests that the best way to become a master technician is to: “Take all the classes you can. Pay attention at work and learn from your mistakes. Most of what you learn is on the job, so don’t be afraid to ask questions if you’re not sure of something.”
Adam Ratgen
Nissan SCOPE Master
Nissan of Greer
Greer, SC
Adam Ratgen says achieving master technician status has been very rewarding: “The best part of it has been getting a pay raise and that a lot of guys look up to me now.” The rewards go beyond the paycheck and the respect. “I look forward to diagnosing, fixing and helping the customer out. I enjoy giving the vehicle back to them and knowing I fixed it in a timely manner.”
For those hoping to become a master technician, Adam’s guidance includes the following: stay current on new models, stay busy at work, get to Nissan classes in Atlanta, and focus on learning electrical systems. His other recommendations are inspiring: “Keep at it. Don’t give up. Keep trying. Keep learning new stuff. Try to get as much information from anyone more experienced.”
Adam believes in the Nissan brand. “Personally, I love Nissan. They are very innovative. I love the new designs of the Altima and Rogue. The front ends look aggressive. They are very dependable and long-lasting.”
Adam loves to fix cars and ride motorcycles when he is not at work.
Jonathan Crawford
Infiniti KEI Master
Beshoff Infiniti
San Jose, CA
Jonathan Crawford has had a couple of exciting events take place in the recent past: he became a master technician last year and just proposed to his girlfriend of two years. Jonathan is a dedicated Infiniti employee during the day, but in his time off, he is currently knee-deep in wedding planning with his fiancée.
With eight years of experience under his belt, Crawford likes electrical repairs more than anything else. “It’s very much like being a detective and you’re looking for the culprit.”
Jonathan achieved master technician status by first going to vocational school. He explained: “I went to DeAnza College’s vocational program, and without any previous automotive experience, they prepared me for obtaining my credentials and gave me the needed experience to transfer to a job as an automotive technician.” Crawford urges new technicians to: “Get their credentials (ASEs) and then concentrate on training for emission systems and engine controls.”
Curt Kruse
Nissan SCOPE Master
Jaremko Nissan, Inc.
Spokane Valley, WA
“I think every mechanic likes working on engines. I think that’s why every mechanic gets into the business – to work on engines,” master technician Curt Kruse says. Although he loves engine work, Curt says he will gladly work on any vehicle system. He says up-and-coming technicians should focus on gaining familiarity with all the systems in the vehicles. “You have to put in your time at the dealership with your hands on the cars, reading ASIST and all the bulletins and the TechTalk magazines. You’ve got to be on Virtual Academy, and you have to learn as much as you can.”
Becoming a master technician has been a major accomplishment for Kruse. “It’s personal pride and an achievement. It feels like a starting point, and it is nice to be rewarded for my schooling and the time that I have put in. It is nice to see something come to pass.”
Even more than engine work, Curt values his coworkers. “We have an excellent group of technicians here. We are a very small dealer with a family atmosphere. I look forward to working with my technicians every day.”
At home, Curt spends time with his kids and builds scale models of cars and trucks.
Frank Carulli
Nissan SCOPE Master
McGrath Nissan, Inc.
Elgin, IL
Master technician Frank Carulli’s brother lead him to Nissan. “My brother worked for Nissan. He is ten years older than me so I started helping him about ten years before I started working at Nissan. The first Nissan I worked on was a 1987 Sentra.” With Nissan for almost 16 years now, he says he achieved master technician status by studying, working hard, going to classes, and taking all of his ASEs. He says that as a master technician: “People acknowledge that you work hard and you are good at what you do.”
For new technicians, Frank says: “Concentrate on one job at a time and try to learn something new everyday.” He recommends focusing on the diagnosis aspect of the job, and his favorite vehicle to work on is the LEAF because it is new and different. When asked what he looks forward to at his job, Frank said: “Making money and keeping the people happy.”
In his time away from the job, Frank plays sports, goes fishing, and loves anything Chicago- Bears, Bulls, Cubs, and Blackhawks.
David Lang
Nissan SCOPE Master
Kings Nissan
Cincinnati, OH
David Lang says: “I like all Nissan cars. I don’t really have a favorite; it just depends on what I would need the vehicle for. If I needed a racecar, I would choose the GTR. If I needed a family car, I would choose the Altima. I really do like the new Altima. The redesign of it, the technology and the great fuel economy that it gets; I really feel like that’s a good stepping stone for the company.” For new technicians, Lang suggests: “Stay focused. It takes time and a lot of hard work. Try your best and keep focusing on your goals to become a master technician. The first thing I would recommend to someone coming up in the field is to be an electrical specialist and get your ASEs for that.”
When asked about what he hopes for his future, David said: “I would like to be a service manager one day so that could be my next goal. Right now, I am soaking in as much as I can every day, staying in control of my attitude when I am at work.”
In his time away from work, David plays golf in a league, plays paint ball, and goes to the drag strip on Friday nights.
TechTalk would also like to congratulate and recognize these Infiniti and Nissan Master Technicians
