Congratulations to our Nissan SCOPE & Infiniti KEI Masters

Zhijiang Liu

Nissan SCOPE Master

San Leandro Nissan

San Leandro, CA

Zhijiang started working on cars when he was 16 years old and obtained his first driver's license. "The old cars I drove always needed fixing to keep going." Liu took courses in Alameda, CA, to learn more about auto repair while working part time in a restaurant. One of his instructors recommended Zhijiang to the Nissan dealer, and Zhijiang Liu started working at the dealership full time in 2005.

"ASIST is really easy to use, I can always find all of the information I need pretty quickly," said Nissan SCOPE Master Technician Zhijiang Liu. "I use it a lot. All of the bulletins are very helpful."

Liu likes repairing emissions and electrical concerns the best. "I enjoy reading the diagrams," stated Zhijiang.

In his off time, Zhijiang Liu fishes for large-mouth bass and striped bass. Zhijiang Liu's advice to new technicians is to know the basics. Learn basic electrical repair and other fundamentals. "You have to know the basics before you can understand what the service manuals or bulletins are telling you."

"ASIST is really easy to use, I can always find all of the information I need pretty quickly,"

Jonathan Myers

Infiniti KEI Master

Orlando Infiniti

Orlando, FL

After three years in the Army working on heavy-wheeled vehicles, KEI Master Technician Jonathan Myers went to college to work on lighter vehicles. Graduating at the top of his class, Jonathan moved to Orlando after receiving an offer to attend BMW training at the UTI campus in Florida. Myers then switched from BMWs to work on Nissan vehicles for five years. For the last three years, Jonathan has worked on Infinitis. "I like the FX and the Ms best because they have more space," stated Jonathan.

Myers enjoys fishing and golfing when he is not working on cars.

Jonathan says online training is very important.

"The Virtual Academy has streamlined and organized the courses," he said. "Before, the classes were just out there. Now, we have a path and a target and know which courses to take first and which to take next."

In addition to the online training, Myers attends classroom training to stay up to date. "I just went to JX training. There's a lot of information coming on the new models," said Jonathan.

"Now, we have a path and a target and know which courses to take first and which to take next."

Bryan Jacobs

Nissan SCOPE Master

Jenkins Nissan, Inc.

Lakeland, FL

Watching and reading about hot rodding and drag racing is how Nissan Master Technician Bryan Jacobs first became interested in becoming an automotive technician. Years later, Jacobs recalls buying cars to fix them up for the track.

Jacobs, who attended UTI for formal technician training, holds an associate's degree in automotive technology. After graduation, Jacobs worked at a Toyota store for a short time before moving to a Nissan dealership in South Carolina. He moved from South Carolina to the Lakeland, Florida area and has worked at the same Nissan dealership since. Working on drivability issues and diagnosis are what drives Jacobs. He enjoys the challenge of using his brain instead of his muscle to fix cars.

"Knowing that I am helping people with their cars and knowing that the dealership gives good customer service is what makes me want to come to work every day," he said.

Jacobs has some simple advice for technicians looking to become Master Technicians: Find a mentor among the Master Techs at their dealership. He credits fellow Master Technicians Lewis Rider and Trae Tart for taking him under their wings and mentoring him, saying he couldn't have done it without them.

"The most important thing for new technicians to understand is basic electrical repairs."

Ron Runyan

Nissan SCOPE Master

Future Nissan, Inc.

Roseville, CA

One of the most helpful things in repairing vehicles is the support Nissan provides to dealers, according to Nissan SCOPE Master Technician Ron Runyan. "When you get a trouble code, the ASIST has a new program to repair it," he said. "Nissan has gotten much quicker at having a repair for trouble codes. They are right on top of it."

Ron feels fortunate to have at his workstation electronic ROs, ALLDATA, and ASIST. "It's a little more typing, but saves on the wear and tear of walking to the parts counter and then to the service advisor," he added.

Runyan started working the 3:30 p.m. to midnight shift at a Union 76 while in high school. He became interested in car repairs from the beginning.

"All the girls came in for gas and they liked the uniform," he recalled.

After Union 76, Ron worked on alignments and brakes in a front-end shop. One day, the local tool salesman told Ron about an opening at a nearby Nissan dealership. Runyan worked at that Nissan dealership for 10 years and for 16 years has been at his current dealership, which employs seven Master Techs.

Runyon spends his off time golfing, riding his Softail with his wife, driving her Sportster and watching his little one play baseball.

"One of the most helpful things in repairing vehicles is the support Nissan provides to dealers."

Richard Klink

Infiniti KEI Master

Infiniti of Palm Beaches

West Palm Beach, FL

"CONSULT III plus is a big improvement, it's a lot faster and I like it a lot," said KEI Master Technician Richard Klink.

Richard started working at the INFINITI dealership in 1991 with a few of his friends. Klink started as a porter until a spot opened up as a technician. To achieve the elite title of KEI Master Technician, Richard took online computer training and went to classroom training while working at the dealership.

"It's cool to work on the latest vehicles, especially the new JX, which has a ton of toys," said Klink. "And the rear hatch opening is pretty neat."

Richard owns a 1995 Q45 with 132,000 miles. "It drives great and handles great…the 280 horsepower motor is more powerful than most engines that size."

KEI Master Technician Richard Klink spends his free time cruising around the Florida Everglades on his airboat, riding his four-wheeler and hunting gators.

"CONSULT III plus is a big improvement, it's a lot faster and I like it a lot."

Ricardo Campos

Nissan SCOPE Master

Premier Nissan

San Jose, CA

Nissan SCOPE Master Technician Ricardo Campos said, "Whether you're performing diagnostics or searching for a voltage drop, solving electrical problems is always interesting."

Although Ricardo Campos likes electrical and diagnosis work the best, he repairs the entire vehicle from bumper to bumper.

"The TSBs are always helpful as long as you verify it is the same problem as the one in the TSB," stated Campos. "Just because it has the same code does not necessarily mean it has the same problem."

Ricardo graduated from a technical college in 2007. He continues to study online and takes as many courses as he can. Campos is also a certified LEAF technician.

After work, Ricardo likes to spend time with his son and ride his Harley Davidson Road Glide.

"Just because it has the same code does not necessarily mean it has the same problem."

Michael Redder

Infiniti KEI Master

Infiniti of Charlotte

Matthews, NC

KEI Master Technician Michael Redder had an old jeep and Maxima that needed loving care, so he started tinkering with them while still in high school. After graduation, he went through a trade school that offered Nissan specific training.

After trade school, Michael went directly to work at an INFINITI dealership. "I trained under a guy who had been working on Infiniti and Nissan vehicles since they were Datsuns," said Redder.

Michael took all of the online and classroom training. "I think the service manager tested me when I asked to go to training," he said. "He sent me to Ohio for class - 550 miles away from North Carolina. After he knew I'd go anywhere for training, he got me into classes in Atlanta."

Redder made a point about the importance of the online training when he said, "Some of the other guys weren't eligible for class because they hadn't kept up with the online training."

Michael likes working on M cars the best. "The quality makes them one of my favorites," he said.

Michael Redder likes the CONSULT III plus interface because it is easier to navigate and does not experience as many crashes as its forerunner. Redder said, "I really like the VDR and the oscilloscope functions."

"I really like the VDR and the oscilloscope functions."

Chris Moore

Nissan SCOPE Master

Carolina Nissan Inc.

Burlington, NC

"I love the CONSULT III plus," said Nissan SCOPE Master Technician Chris Moore. "The C-III plus walkthrough and navigation is better than the C-III." Not a surprising statement, since Chris also enjoys air conditioning and electrical work. He is a certified LEAF technician.

SCOPE Master Technician Chris Moore attended automotive college in Nashville on a football scholarship. Chris apprenticed at a GM dealership before going to work for NISSAN. Moore said, "Nissans are great - they're pretty straightforward to repair. The Altima is the best to repair."

Chris said he spends a lot of time studying online and attending classroom training. "Eventually, you think you know a lot, and then in training you always learn something new," Moore said. "The dealership owner said that he would give 100 percent to keep me trained if I gave 100 percent.

Chris Moore likes fishing and watching sports, especially the Tar Heels.

"In training you always learn something new."

Chris Harrison

Nissan SCOPE Master

Go Nissan 104th

Denver, CO

Nissan SCOPE Master Technician Chris Harrison became interested in auto mechanics after fixing up his first car, a 1968 Mustang. "I don't tinker a lot outside of work anymore," stated Chris. "I am a big Nissan guy. I like working on the Xterra and the Rogue."

After obtaining an automotive degree, taking all the online courses as well as classroom training and working on vehicles for more than 20 years, Harrison still concentrates on becoming more educated to become a better technician. "I still enjoy working and learning," he said. "The visual aids with the online training are pretty good. Visual aids help more than just words."

When asked which vehicle system he likes the best, Harrison stated: "I dabble with whatever. I do it all. I like variety."

Chris said, "Whatever the condition is on the vehicle, using our CONSULT III plus usually helps make it pretty obvious what the problem is."

When asked about the newer technology on today's vehicles Harrison stated, "The surround view is pretty cool and I like the lane departure warning."

When not at work, Chris likes to spend time with his family and 6-year-old son.

"The visual aids with the online training are pretty good. Visual aids help more than just words."

Jason Perry

Nissan SCOPE Master

Action Nissan

Nashville, TN

Jason Perry is a 21-year automotive technician veteran who started off as a technician at a Toyota store. He moved to Action Nissan 13 years ago.

Perry enjoys the people he works with and has never looked back on his decision to work on Nissans. His favorite R.O. is a check engine light complaint with diagnosis because he enjoys the challenge. "It's not just unbolt this and install a part - you have to use your brain," Perry said.

Perry uses the C-III plus on a daily basis because he says it is the most instrumental tool in the dealership and makes his life easier. On the occasion that he does call TechLine, Perry says: "I always get good information, and I actually know several of the consultants personally." Perry made a point of mentioning that his 21-year-old son is also a technician at another Nissan dealership in the Nashville area.

When not at Action Nissan, Perry enjoys doing anything outdoors - boating, water skiing, tubing and dirt biking.

"The C-III plus is the most instrumental tool in the dealership and makes his life easier."

Christopher Rice

Nissan SCOPE Master

Christopher Rice

Forest, VA

This Master Technician is following in his father's footsteps. Christopher Rice got his start as a technician while participating in a two-year apprenticeship during high school. Christopher actually served his apprenticeship at the Chrysler dealership where his father has worked as a technician for 30 years.

Christopher considers himself a heavy technician, based on the type of work he is given and what he enjoys doing. Christopher enjoys the heavy work because it requires the kind of skills needed to make repairs correctly on the first try. He went on to say: "I get satisfaction from taking a car majorly apart and putting it all back together." Christopher said the C-III plus tool is an improvement over the C-III and finds himself using it more and more every day.

Christopher enjoys where he works, and added, "I learn something new every day. There is always something different and new happening at the dealership."

"The C-III plus tool is an improvement over the C-III..."

Mike Tyler

Nissan SCOPE Master

Nissan of Saratoga

Malta, NY

Mike Tyler enjoys drivability and electrical work - a niche he said not everybody can do well. One of the most rewarding aspects of being good at drivability and electrical work is when customers come back and ask for him by name, Tyler said.

This customer service-orientated Nissan Master Technician's motto is, "fix it right the first time." Mike Tyler says his customer focus is what drives him to work every day. Tyler has been a technician since 1989, after graduating from Lincoln Technical Institute. He has spent all but three years of his career as a Saturn technician. When Saturn closed, the time had come to try something different. "I've been working on Nissan cars for three years now, and it's been the best change that could have happened," Mike said.

Training, Tyler said, is key to being a successful technician. "I encourage more technicians to accept training," he added. "Don't become stagnant - and always look for ways to improve your skills."

"Training, is key to being a successful technician."

Justin Boccagno

Nissan SCOPE Master

Lancaster Nissan Inc.

East Petersburg, PA

Justin Boccagno knew at a very young age that he wanted to be an automotive technician. Justin, who grew up on a farm helping his grandfather repair farm equipment, realized that he wanted to make a living by fixing things. When Boccagno became of age, he attended trade school at Penco Tech and graduated in 2003. He spent two years working in the aftermarket before coming to Lancaster Nissan.

Justin enjoys heavy repair. His favorite Nissan vehicle to work on is the Murano.

"The Murano is roomy, easy to work on and technician-friendly," he said.

Boccagno said the C-III plus tool's new features make it easier to navigate versus the old C-III. He enjoys working at Lancaster Nissan and wouldn't trade it for anything.

"They don't treat you like a number like they do in the aftermarket," Justin said.

His advice for young technicians striving to become Master Technicians is, "Take all the training you can take. Be a sponge, and always strive for more."

"Take all the training you can take."

Bradley Lovette

Nissan SCOPE Master

Crossroads Nissan/Hickory

Hickory, NC

Bradley Lovette enjoys drivability work. Lovette gets to work like a detective, never knowing quite what he's going to find or where he is going to end up. Bradley says the C-III plus tool is great: "I like the shortcuts and the shorter load time - it's a great tool."

This Nissan Master Technician loves working on Nissans. In fact, Master Technician Brad Lovette enjoys working on Nissans so much, he still owns his 2001 Frontier (with 308,000 miles) that he purchased new. Lovette knew he wanted to be a technician while working on farm equipment during high school agricultural class. His class rebuilt a Bobcat skid steer for a local farmer. After high school, Lovette received an associate's degree in automotive technology from Wilkes Community College. Lovette has worked at Nissan dealers during his entire 15-year career. He likes the people at the current dealership, adding: "It's like a family here."

When not at the dealership repairing Nissans, Lovette spends time with his wife and 3-year-old daughter. He is also the division chief at the local fire department.

"The C-III plus tool is great: I like the shortcuts and the shorter load time — it's a great tool."

Suhaib Tawil

Infiniti KEI Master

Beshoff Infiniti

San Jose, CA

"I love diagnostic tools, especially the CONSULT III plus."

Suhaib always liked working on cars. "It's always been a hobby of mine," said Suhaib. Before he took any automotive classes, Tawil installed stereos in his car and in his father's car.

Suhaib learned the fundamentals of automotive repair by attending a technical school for two years. Tawil did so well in class that he was offered an opportunity to take six months of hands-on training with BMW. After completing the BMW training, Suhaib decided to go to work with Nissan/Infiniti dealerships.

"I've always owned the 300Zs - I have four of them now," he said. "Every week, I drive a different one. I'm always calling the insurance company to switch the insurance to the one I want to drive this week. My 1990 Twin Turbo runs 540 horsepower and is my show car."

Suhaib stays in shape to work on cars by kickboxing five days each week. He also rides a motorcycle when he's not driving one of his cars.

Tawil said, "The most important thing for new technicians to understand is basic electrical repairs. My knowledge of electrical and diagnostics is one of the reasons I achieved KEI Master so quickly."

"Find a mentor among the master techs at their dealership."
