2013 IPL G Convertible
The new 2013 G Convertible Infiniti Performance Line (IPL) model was given exclusive exterior and interior styling features and was designed to provide unique driving attributes. The IPL G Convertible vehicle combines special aerodynamic styling, an IPL-tuned V6, tuned exhaust and suspension, 19-inch IPL aluminum-alloy wheels and a unique leather-appointed interior. Its three-piece retractable hardtop was designed to look as good with the top up as when it’s down.
IPL Mechanical Changes
The IPL G37 Convertible features an advanced VQ37VHR, tuned 3.7-liter V6 24-valve engine with Variable Valve Event and Lift (VVEL®) intake camshafts. This was incorporated with the Continuously Variable Valve Timing Control System (CVTCS) technology that optimizes opening of intake and exhaust valves. This helps improve performance and allows up to a 7,500 RPM redline. The IPL G Convertible engine generates 343 HP @ 7,400 RPM and 273 lb-ft @ 5,200 RPM, as a result of exhaust system and engine management changes. This is an increase of 18 hp over its non-IPL predecessor. Re-tuning the ECU with the VVEL technology continually optimizes the air-fuel mixture and ignition timing to deliver a quicker response, and raises the maximum horsepower output point to 7,400 RPM. To obtain a natural acceleration feel, the torque curve from low revs to the maximum torque point (5,200 RPM) was tuned for linearity. The exhaust system is a full IPL-tuned high-flow exhaust design with independent left and right large diameter pipes. The muffler’s inner structure design and materials were optimized to reduce pressure and provide an appropriate performance exhaust note. This resulted in a 30% reduction in exhaust pressure versus the base G Convertible’s Y-pipe exhaust system design.
The formidable VQ engine is again matched to an electronically controlled 7-speed automatic transmission with Adaptive Shift control (ASC). Power can be driven to the rear wheels via the quick-shift Drive Sport (DS) mode or with the solid magnesium paddle shifters affixed to the steering column. Driver-adaptive learning and algorithm senses driving style and then adjusts automatic shifting accordingly.
Ride and Handling
The 2013 IPL G Convertible’s design team didn’t just enhance vehicle engine performance. They also focused on the IPL vehicle’s “total performance.” This meant making improvements for driveability, including handling, flat ride and smooth ride comfort. To do this the, IPL team firmed up the suspension. The IPL-tuned four-wheel independent, multi-link performance suspension includes: independent doublewishbone front and multi-link rear, front and rear stabilizer bars, and all-new HF-type Path® shock absorbers on the front and Dual Flow Path® shock absorbers on the rear with unique damping control. Tuning the IPL’s suspension and increasing damping management helps to optimize each aspect of its suspension, effectively connecting the driver to the road surface while minimizing uncomfortable vibrations. The front spring rates have been increased 14 percent over the G Convertible Sport model, and rear spring rates have been increased four percent. Front stabilizer spring rates have been increased six percent over the G Convertible Sport model, and rear stabilizer spring rates increased 125 percent.
The IPL G Convertible is equipped with vehicle-speed-sensitive power steering and sport-tuned steering gear designed to provide fluid, quick and precise control. The IPL model also has large 4-wheel power-assisted sport brakes with ventilated discs (14-inch front brake rotors and 13.8-inch rear). It utilizes aluminum-alloy opposed calipers (4-piston front/2-piston rear). It’s also equipped with Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) and Traction Control System (TCS).
Exterior Feature Modifications
The IPL G Convertible’s exterior modifications include an aerodynamic front bumper/fascia design with integrated fog lights and black finishers. Other features are the sculpted side sills and large-diameter dual chrome exhaust tips. Each part is shaped to complement the G Convertible’s aggressive and seductive styling. These changes were combined with exclusive 19 x (Front 8.5J, Rear 9.0J) IPL split 7-spoke graphite-finish wheels, and low-profile W-speed rated Bridgestone Potenza RE050A performance tires, to give the IPL G Convertible attitude. The new IPL G Convertible is offered in just two exterior colors: moonlight white and malbec black.
