Today the versatile HomeLink® has become a necessary convenience and well-used wireless control system. This feature allows our customers to store and transmit a maximum of 3 radio signals to open and close their garage door, front gate, or even turn on their home’s security system, outdoor lighting or interior appliances, etc. HomeLink® Quicktrain technology is also very easy to program so that it syncs up with the code of the customer’s original transmitter. The HomeLink® Universal Transceiver can be used to activate the programmed device. However, sometimes a customer describes a concern with the usage of his or her HomeLink® mirror unit. To significantly reduce unnecessary repairs, you should perform the following when diagnosing the HomeLink®-equipped mirror unit.

If the RF signal from the HomeLink® transceiver checks okay the HomeLink® LED and the Tester lights will illuminate.

HOMELINK® TRANSMITTER TEST PROCEDURE

Universal Transceiver is functioning by allowing you to test its Radio Frequency (RF) signal and confirm that the HomeLink® is programmable.

1. Connect the HomeLink® Transmitter Tester to a power source and set it where you will be able to see the LED lights on the tester unit during the test procedure.

Note: Verify when first plugged in, ALL the indicator lights on the HomeLink® Tester illuminate.

2. Move to the customer’s vehicle and turn the ignition switch to the ON position with engine OFF while performing the HomeLink® Universal Transceiver test.

3. Press and hold the two outer HomeLink® buttons on the HomeLink® Transceiver. The indicator light on the HomeLink® Transceiver illuminates steady for approximately 20 seconds, and then flashes rapidly for another 10 seconds, and then goes out. When the LED goes out, release the buttons. The HomeLink® is now in default mode.

4. Press EACH HomeLink® button individually and observe the tester unit LEDs as you press the buttons. If each individual red LED on the tester illuminates as you press the buttons on the HomeLink® transceiver, they are successfully sending the RF signal. If the RF signal from the HomeLink® transceiver checks okay, next, confirm that the HomeLink® Transceiver buttons are programmable.

5. Press and hold the two outer HomeLink® buttons again, the LED will illuminate steady for about 20 seconds. When the LED begins to flash rapidly, release the buttons. HomeLink® is now in training mode.

6. Position the end of the hand-held transmitter from the test kit 1-3 inches away from the HomeLink® surface. Using both hands, simultaneously press and hold a HomeLink® button and the hand-held transmitter button. DO NOT release the buttons until the HomeLink® indicator light flashes slowly and then rapidly. When the indicator light flashes rapidly, both the HomeLink® button and the hand-held transmitter button can be released. The rapid flashing indicates successful programming.

7. To check, press and hold the programmed HomeLink® button and observe the indicator light on the transceiver and the tester. If the indicator light is solid and continuous, programming is complete.

8. Perform steps 5-6 to confirm that the other buttons can be successfully programmed as well.

9. If you have confirmed the inside mirror equipped with HomeLink® Universal Transceiver can successfully transmit its RF signal and all of the HomeLink® buttons are OK, clear the programming (to default) by pressing and holding the two outer buttons until the indicator light begins to flash.

IF HOMELINK® TESTS OK

Confirm compatibility of the vehicle’s HomeLink® with the customer’s home equipment by contacting HomeLink® support at 1-800-355-3515. Make sure to have all necessary information, i.e., model and model year of the vehicle and customer operated devices.

For example, a 2011 vehicle equipped with HomeLink® 3 is not compatible with a customer’s garage door opener with MyQ™ remote technology.

HomeLink® 3 can be made compatible with MyQ™ with a “Repeater.” For further information and to obtain a “Repeater,” contact HomeLink®.

IF HOMELINK® TESTS NG

Perform repairs as outlined in the appropriate Electronic Service Manual (ESM). Other checks:

• Make sure that the vehicle of concern is not in “Transit Mode” (if equipped). Refer to NTB10-124 or ITB10-063 for “Transit Mode” details.

• Make sure that the “Extended Storage Switch” is in the “Customer Delivery” position (if equipped). Refer to NTB10-124 or ITB10-063 for “Extended Storage Switch” details.

If you have confirmed that the HomeLink® Universal Transceiver functions correctly and can be programmed to activate devices, it may be possible that the customer is not familiar with the HomeLink® programming procedure (located in the vehicle’s Owner’s Manual). It is recommended that you have the customer contact HomeLink® support directly at 1-800-355-3515 from his or her home.
