The impressive torque and horsepower of the Cummins® 5.0L V8 Turbo Diesel engine needs a capable transmission to direct power to the drivetrain. The AISIN 6-speed transmission
(RE6R01A) fills that role with six forward gears and electronic controls to respond to varying driving conditions and hauling challenges.
FEATURES AND BENEFITS
- High torque capacity to compliment the Cummins® 5.0L V8 Turbo Diesel engine.
- Maximum towing capacity of 12,300-lbs. (when properly equipped, Cummins® engine only). Towing capacity varies by configuration.
- Tow mode selector and manual shift buttons on the column-mounted gear selector lever.
- In addition to the in-radiator transmission fluid cooler, the 2016 TITAN XD diesel is equipped with an external transmission fluid cooler.
- An external Transmission Control Module (TCM) is located in the front passenger footwell area.
Manual shift mode:
- Pressing the manual shift mode button while driving puts the transmission into manual shift mode.
- Shift ranges can be selected manually and the shift range will be displayed on the position indicator in the combination meter.
- Shift ranges can be selected up or down (+ or –) in single gear increments: M1 ←→ M2 ←→ M3 ←→ M4 ←→ M5 ←→ M6 ←→ D (D is normal driving mode)
- In manual shift mode, the transmission may not shift to the selected gear immediately because of vehicle speed. The transmission will upshift or downshift when vehicle speed matches the programmed transmission shift points. This helps maintain driving performance and reduces the chance of vehicle damage or loss of control.
- In manual shift mode, the transmission will not up shift to a higher gear than is manually selected. When the vehicle speed decreases, the transmission automatically downshifts and shifts to 1st gear before the vehicle comes to a stop.
- For example; if manual range M3 is selected the transmission will shift automatically only within the range of M1 ←→ M2 ←→ M3. When slowing down, the transmission will automatically downshift and into 1st gear before the vehicle comes to a stop. When accelerating from a stop, the transmission will automatically upshift to 3rd gear but will not shift higher than 3rd gear.
- To cancel manual shift mode, press and hold the + button. The shift range will return to D, normal driving mode. D will display on the position indicator in the combination meter.
- Downshift Rev Matching (DRM): DRM is a part of manual shift mode; it raises the engine rpm momentarily to provide smoother downshifts as well as a sportier feel and sound.
- Adaptive Shift Control (ASC): ASC uses input from the acceleration sensors and holds the current gear slightly longer for better acceleration while exiting a turn or driving up an incline.
TRANSMISSION SERVICE AND REPAIR
- At vehicle launch, AISIN transmission service will be limited to the torque converter, oil pan, oil strainer and magnet, breather tube, and external seals, sensors, switches, controls, wiring, and mounting. Internal malfunctions will require the replacement of the transmission assembly.
- If the transmission must be removed, be sure to use the Trans Adapter Plate (J-51981) to avoid damaging the transmission oil pan.
TRANSMISSION WORK SUPPORT QUICK LEARN (Transmission Adjustment)
- If the transmission or the TCM is replaced, a CONSULT Work Support procedure must be used to help calibrate the TCM to the IP characteristics of the transmission.
- The pressure characteristics and electrical current flow of each transmission solenoid may vary slightly. The TCM must learn these individual characteristics. This procedure adjusts for any differences to ensure the correct pressures are learned for optimum shift quality and timing.
TRANSMISSION FAIL-SAFE
- If the TCM communication is lost or a DTC is set that prevents accurate shift scheduling, the TCM/transmission may enter a fail-safe mode.
- Fail-safe mode attempts to prevent or limit damage to the transmission by limiting the available gear ranges.
NOTE: Even if all of the electronic circuits are normal, the transmission may enter fail-safe mode under special conditions (such as when the brake pedal is depressed suddenly from a hard wheel spin status to stop the rotation of the wheels). In this case, turn the ignition OFF, wait 5 seconds, and then turn the ignition back ON. Normal shift patterns will resume.
FAIL-SAFE MODE OPERATION
- The transmission will only operate in 3rd gear and reverse.
- If vehicle speed is above the range for 3rd gear when fail-safe is initiated, 5th gear will be available until the vehicle slows to a safe speed to allow 3rd gear.
- When the transmission shifts to 3rd gear, 5th gear is no longer available.
- The transmission continues to operate only in 3rd gear and reverse until the condition that caused fail-safe has been addressed.
- The fail-safe solenoid valve fixes the transmission at the 3rd gear, 5th gear, or R and deactivates the lock-up control when A/T fluid temperature is low or during fail-safe.
PROTECTION CONTROL
The TCM for the 2016 TITAN XD diesel transmission (RE6R01A) has protection control logic that temporarily protects the transmission under certain conditions. The TCM automatically returns the transmission to normal operation when protection is no longer needed.
- Fluid temperature is low: When the A/T fluid temperature becomes lower than the specified temperature, the\ transmission will operate only in 3rd and reverse.
- Fluid temperature is high: When the A/T fluid temperature becomes higher than the specified temperature, engine torque is reduced according to the temperature (the hig the temperature, the more engine torque is reduced).
- Reverse prohibit control: If driving forward in D at more than the specified speed and the shift selector is moved to R, the gear becomes neutral.
- Forward prohibit control: If driving in reverse with the transmission selector in the R position at more than the specified speed, and the shift selector is moved to D; the gear becomes neutral.
TRANSMISSION FLUID
- Capacity: Approx. 14.8 qts. (14.0L) Genuine NISSAN Matic K ATF.
- Check and change intervals: Transmission fluid should be checked every 10,000 miles (16,000 km) and changed every 20,000 miles (32,000 km).
NOTE: Follow specific check and change procedures for the 6AT: RE6R01A 6-speed transmission detailed in the Electronic Service Manual (ESM).
